Alcohol is not an ordinary commodity. This is what you should know before drinking.

Harmful effects

Alcohol is an intoxicant that can cause both acute and long-term harm. The World Health Organization classifies alcohol as carcinogenic to humans.

  • Cancer. Alcohol raises the risk of cancer of the mouth, throat, larynx, oesophagus, liver, colon, rectum and breast. The risk rises with the amount consumed, and no amount has been shown to be free of risk.
  • Liver. Fatty liver, alcoholic hepatitis and cirrhosis.
  • Heart and circulation. High blood pressure, arrhythmia and stroke.
  • Mental health. Depression, anxiety, disturbed sleep and dependence.
  • Injury. Accidents, falls, road traffic injuries and violence.

When alcohol should not be used

  • During pregnancy, when trying to conceive, and while breastfeeding. No safe amount is known for the foetus.
  • Before or while driving, cycling or operating machinery. The Norwegian limit is 0.2 ‰.
  • Together with medicines affected by alcohol. Ask a doctor or pharmacist.
  • By children and adolescents. The brain develops into the mid-twenties and is particularly vulnerable.

Age limits in Norway

18 years for drinks up to and including 22 % ABV. 20 years for drinks above 22 % ABV. Buying or obtaining alcohol for anyone below the age limit is prohibited.
